Red Wood Summer
A chronicle of the increasing use of the natural resources of the redwood forest and marine ecosystems of the Mendocino Coast, this book starts out by sketching the earliest interactions of man and nature to give a context for the later, more detailed story occurring in the last half of the 1900s. That half-century saw the rapid rise of forest empires and a vast fishing fleet. The use of the natural resources boomed, peaked, and went into collapse, leaving little left of the industrial economy that had employed 1,000+ people. The kind of men who were instrumental in building the boom is laid out in detail, as is the story of the foresters who were working to build a more sustainable future in natural resource use. All throughout this time, there were ever-present government regulations and environmental harassment of industry workers. It all came to a head in an event called Redwood Summer, a confrontation of environmental marchers arrayed against many law enforcement personnel at the forest products complex in Fort Bragg. All that is left now is empty land at that mill site.

The book therefore consists of two main parts: an exploration of the scientific and philosophical realities of the world, and a history of the Catholic Church arising from its Jewish roots in the Holy Family at Nazareth and continuing through twenty-two centuries of salvation history.
The first part of the book is an engaging read for both its content and cohesiveness. The second part presents a sweeping account of real-world history, filled with the many twists and turns common to any historical chronicle. Many of the articles are best read with thoughtful reflection on the truths presented, along with comparison to what the popular media has often reported on the same subjects.
